In today’s digital age, social media has become an inseparable part of daily life. From connecting with friends and family to accessing global information and educational resources, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have transformed the way young people communicate and learn. While these platforms offer numerous benefits, they also bring significant risks, especially for adolescents and young minds who are still developing critical thinking and emotional resilience.
Recognizing this dual nature of social media, the Scroll Smart initiative was launched to educate students on navigating the online world safely. The program aims not only to protect young users from potential harm but also to empower them to harness social media positively. Topics covered in the initiative include digital literacy, online privacy, cyberbullying awareness, and strategies for maintaining mental well-being while engaging with digital content.
Pehansa Wijenayaka, who is a fellow of the Online Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program of IFDC, Cohort 1, leads the initiative. She combines her expertise as an advocate and her training in international psychology and counselling to guide students toward responsible and safe social media use.
“Social media is a powerful tool, but without proper guidance, it can lead to stress, anxiety, or exposure to harmful content,” said Wijenayaka. “Scroll Smart encourages students to become mindful digital citizens who can enjoy the benefits of social platforms while avoiding their risks.”
The initiative uses interactive workshops, real-life examples, and scenario-based learning to help students recognize and respond to online dangers. Students are guided on topics such as identifying misinformation, handling cyberbullying, managing screen time, and safeguarding personal information. These sessions also emphasize the positive potential of social media—how students can use these platforms to enhance learning, connect with like-minded peers, and engage in community projects or advocacy campaigns.
Dr. M C Rasmin, founder of IFDC, stated, “This initiative is a great step forward where young people are self-motivated and show genuine passion in addressing online child sexual abuse prevention. Programs like Scroll Smart inspire students to take responsibility for their digital safety and to contribute positively to their communities.”
Parental and educator involvement is another key aspect of the initiative. By providing tools and resources for adults, Scroll Smart ensures a supportive environment where students can discuss online experiences safely and receive guidance on responsible usage.
The program has already received positive feedback from schools and educators, who report improved student awareness regarding online risks and responsible behavior on social media. Many students have expressed that they feel more confident in making thoughtful choices about their online activity.
As social media continues to evolve, programs like Scroll Smart play a crucial role in equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the digital landscape safely. By promoting digital literacy, mental well-being, and online responsibility, the initiative empowers students to turn social media into a tool for growth, learning, and meaningful connection.
