An awareness programme at D.A. Rajapaksa Vidyalaya in Kiribathgoda for students of Grades 9, 10, and 11 on the topic “Preventing Online Child Abuse”, was conducted by IFDC Advocate, Rajapakshage Riyada Helakumara. The session focused on creating awareness about different forms of online child abuse, identifying risky online situations, safe internet usage practices, the importance of protecting personal information, and reporting suspicious messages or individuals to a trusted adult or authority.

This included researching the types of online abuse, such as cyberbullying, online grooming, and exposure to harmful content. Additionally, this programme focused on how children can protect themselves online by using privacy settings, thinking before sharing information, and reporting. suspicious behavior.

Students actively participated in the discussion and expressed that they gained valuable new knowledge. Many stated that they would now use the internet more responsibly and carefully. The presentation helped raise awareness among students about the dangers of online abuse and how to respond safely. Many students said they now feel more confident in identifying and reporting online risks.

Overall, the session encouraged everyone to be more mindful and supportive when using digital platforms. The programme successfully encouraged open discussion among students about online safety and had a positive impact on their understanding of how to protect themselves from online exploitation.

The programme helped Riyada and the participants understand how students perceive online risks such as cyberbullying and grooming, and how to communicate these sensitive topics in an age-appropriate way. The programme also improved communication skills through interactive discussions and creative activities.

“I especially enjoyed engaging with the students, hearing their ideas, and seeing their enthusiasm to learn how to protect themselves online. It was a truly meaningful and rewarding experience” – Rajapakshage Riyada Helakumara
