The Enhance Internet safety of children project was launched to address the rising concerns surrounding online child safety and mental wellness in the Thabuttegama and Rajanganaya areas of Sri Lanka. With children increasingly exposed to cyberbullying, harmful content, and excessive screen time, the project aimed to equip young people and their families with practical knowledge to stay safe in the digital world. The initiative emphasized simple, accessible education through short awareness videos and easy-to-read leaflets developed in local languages.

Throughout the project, the advocate worked on producing engaging digital content that highlighted key topics such as safe online behavior, cyberbullying prevention, and healthy screen habits. These materials were shared across schools, clinics, community centers, and social media platforms, ensuring they reached both children and parents. Collaboration with teachers, youth volunteers, and community leaders played a vital role in expanding the project’s reach and fostering community involvement.

During the implementation process, the advocate learned the importance of presenting online-safety concepts in formats that are easy for children to understand. Visual storytelling, real-life school scenarios, and short, clear messages proved especially effective. The advocate also enjoyed the strong community engagement, particularly the positive responses from parents who appreciated receiving simple and practical guidance to support their children.

The project generated a meaningful impact on the community, as children demonstrated improved awareness of safe digital practices and a better understanding of the emotional effects of online interactions. Parents reported feeling more informed and confident in monitoring their children’s online activities. Teachers supported the effort by sharing the educational materials within their classrooms and school networks, further extending the project’s influence. Overall, the Enhance Internet safety of children initiative successfully broadened conversations around digital safety and mental wellness. By empowering families with knowledge and promoting healthier online habits, the project contributed to building a safer digital environment for children and encouraged long-term community involvement in child protection.
